Sondrestrom AB, Greenland.    Melt water pools on the ice cap.  These pools are found throughout the crevasse area.  The ice cap slopes upward toward the center of Greenland.  It can be likened to a huge dome.  The rise is so gradual that it is almost imperceptible.  However, at the center of Greenland, the surface of the ice cap is about 9,000 feet above sea level.  At this high altitude, it is too cold to melt, even in summer.  These pools are about 150 miles inland from the West Coast of Greenland, or about 75 miles from the edge of the ice cap.  Caption by Bill Nichols.  (Circa 1959)
