Sondrestrom AB, Greenland.      A view of the radar site under construction taken in June of 1959.  A 30-foot hole was dug into the ice.  Timber foundations were laid on the ice and the large "I" beams seen rising above the wood windbreaks (shown here) were fitted onto the foundation.  Note:  The building is now completely erected (completed in October, 1960), and is over five stories high.  It is completely metal and stands high above the surface of the snow on stilt-like beams.  The main portion of the building can be raised on these stilts to keep it level and above the drifting snow.  The snow would cover it in over in a year or two if it were not for this feature.
