Sondrestrom AB, Greenland.      Lt. Gene Uhls "wrassling" the same polar bear skin.  This bear strolled into camp last summer.  This was an unforeseen event, because prior to this time, no one knew that bears ranged on the ice cap.  DYE III, where this bear was shot, is over 100 miles from the coastal terrain where the polar bears normally live.  This summer, two more bears wandered near to DYE III.  One was shot, but buzzing aircraft drove the other off.  The bear driven off was huge and mean.  Attempts were made to shoot this bear from a "Weasel" (a track driven covered vehicle) were soon abandoned when the bear attacked the vehicle.  It stood head and shoulders higher than the Weasel.  Polar bears are vicious, especially when hungry.  One of the scientists of the French Trans-Greenland Expedition was severely mauled by on of this size in 1959.  Caption by Bill Nichols.  (Circa 1959)
