Sondrestrom AB, Greenland.     In April of 1959, the 61st Troop Carrier Squadron was given survival training on the ice cap a few miles from DYE II.  The temperature fell as low as 44 degrees Fahrenheit below zero.  Four crews at a time were given the training until all squadron personnel had completed the training.  After lectures, the crews were dropped off at the training site.  The first afternoon each crew built a para-igloo out of snow blocks and two parachutes.  This is a photo of the para-igloo being constructed.   Caption by Bill Nichols.  (Circa 1959)
