Antarctica. Scott's Hut is located on the north shore of Cape
Evans on Ross Island in Antarctica.
It was erected in 1911. This was Robert Falcon Scott's
(June 6, 1868 - March 29, 1912) headquarters during his
1910-1912 expeditions. He and
his party actually lived in their ship the HMS Discovery, which was moored
next to shore just to the right, out of the picture. This building was used primarily as a
chart room, office, and storage area.
Note the carcass of seals in front of the observer in the
picture. Tins of biscuits are
still in and around the building.
Some tins have been opened and the biscuits are still intact and well
preserved due to the cold and dry climate. The interior of the building is filled to the ceiling with
snow. Scott perished returning
from the pole in 1912. He was
only nine miles from the camp pictured here. Caption by Bill Nichols. (Circa 1959) |
