McMurdo NAS.      Moving day in Antarctica.  This move was made when it became apparent that the 61st TCS couldn't conveniently perform its mission by being billeted in the assigned quarters at McMurdo NAS.  The aircraft were parked on the barrier ice seven miles from the Navy base.  To reach the aircraft the crew members had to spend almost one and one-half hours riding sleds from this base to the aircraft parking ramp.  At times transportation was hard to get.  Colonel Turk decided to have Jamesway quarters erected on the barrier ice for his crew members to live in so they would be close to the flight line.  This alleviated the transportation problem and also provided for additional crew safety, as the route between the Navy base and the flight line traversed a crevasse area, which was becoming more dangerous in the warming summer temperatures.  This photo shows a caravan of sleds being towed by a large Caterpillar tractor.  The sleds contain supplies of the 61st TCS which were moved to their temporary camp on the barrier ice.Caption by Bill Nichols.  (Circa 1959)
