McMurdo NAS, Antarctica.    A seal asleep among the pressure ridges.  These ridges are caused when the ice of McMurdo Sound presses up against the shore. They rise 20 to 40 feet high.  Crevasses form in this area, allowing seals to gain exit from the water.  An almost invisible snow covered crevasse prevented the photographer from getting closer to the seal.  Caption by Bill Nichols.  (Circa 1959)
