The South Pole. Dr. Paul Siple's South Pole. On top of this bamboo pole he placed
a sperical mirror which allowed him to make 360 degree photographs. The big black object protruding above
the surface is the radome for tracking weather balloons. This was the exact position of the
south pole in 1958. The pole
migrates due to the shifting of the earth's crust and its wobble around its
axis. In January and February of
1960, it was located about one-fourth of a mile from this spot. The occupants of Pole Station call this
the "Tourists Pole." Caption
