The South Pole.      Dr. Paul Siple's South Pole.  On top of this bamboo pole he placed a sperical mirror which allowed him to make 360 degree photographs.  The big black object protruding above the surface is the radome for tracking weather balloons.  This was the exact position of the south pole in 1958.  The pole migrates due to the shifting of the earth's crust and its wobble around its axis.  In January and February of 1960, it was located about one-fourth of a mile from this spot.  The occupants of Pole Station call this the "Tourists Pole."  Caption by Bill Nichols.  (Circa 1959)
