South Pole Station, Antarctica. A view showing one of the entrances to
the underground passages. To the
left of the entrance, workmen have laid a foundation for another Clements
building. The original buildings
were all constructed on the surface.
Wooden framework covered with burlap and chicken wire provided the
passageways between the buildings.
The buildings and passageways were quickly covered with drifting snow
which added to its insulating effect.
Now additional building construction requires excavation of the snow
before it can be constructed so that all buildings will be at the same level. This building is to contain a
recreation area and additional office space. .Caption
