South Pole Station,  Antarctica.     Looking North from the South Pole.  These are tractor tracks in the foreground.  Beyond these tractor tracks lies the sastrugi covered polar plateau.  The elevation here is 9,072 feet.  Constantly blowing wind sculpts the otherwise featureless plain with sastrugi ridges.  The ice cap at this point is nearly 10,000 feet thick.   Caption by Bill Nichols.  (Circa 1959)
