Sondrestrom AB, Greenland.  Dr. Clarence “Clay” DuMais (USN Lieutenant) in red on left and a Navy photographer covering the airlift operation.  Dr. DuMais is in charge of South Pole Station.  He spent the Antarctic winter at the South Pole.  A remarkable young man with a great responsibility.  He made history by performing two successful appendectomies at the South Pole.  Dr. DuMais performed the first major surgery, an appendectomy, on CM3 H.
