Antarctica.      A view of the Beardmore Glacier, looking toward McMurdo and the Ross Ice Shelf.  The Beardmore Glacier is 135 miles long and over 25 miles wide at its narrowest point.  It flows down from the interior plateau onto the Ross Ice Shelf.  In 135 miles it plunges from 9,000 ft. to almost sea level, for the Ross Ice Shelf lies over water.  In this area the ice shelf is permanent--it never melts.  Caption by Bill Nichols.  (Circa 1960)
