Aircraft crashes on Greenland’s ice cap

 

A ski-equipped C-130 Hercules assigned to the 17th Tactical Airlift Squadron crashed last Monday (June 5, 1972) on the Greenland ice cap 200 miles east of Sondrestrom Air Base.

 

The aircraft crashed about 200 feet off the runday near DYE 3.

 

It caught fire but everyone aboard was removed and the fire extinguished.  There were eight on board, seven crewmembers and one passenger, Frank Westrup, a Danish national, suffered serious back injuries and died a few hours after the crash.  The only injury sustained by an Air Force crewmember was a sprained ankle.

 

The crewmembers were Captain Roy A. Jared, pilot; 1st Lt. Jacob D. Dustin, co-pilot; 1st Lt Ted Flesher, co-pilot; Captain Robert E. Davis, Instructor Navigator; Major Robert F. Layton, navigator; T/Sgt. Larry Pl Baugher, flight engineer, S/Sgt. Don Poston, loadmaster.

 

The crashed aircraft was on temporary duty for resupply support of two Dewline DYE sites on the Greenland ice cap.

 

Cause of the accident is unknown but is currently being investigated by a board of qualified officers.
