Nor was all of this purely academic.  Pay loads commenced to flow imme-

diately.  From the first of April when the first 17th Squadron aircrew

department Dyess until 15 June, some 184,000 pounds of essential cargo

had been airlifted by aircrews of the 17th Squadron from Elmendorf to

the radar sites it serves.  During this two year period the 17th Troop

Carrier Squadron has flown 20891 accident free hours with 4827 of them

being in direct support of the far northern mission.  It is earnestly

commended to your attention for the formal departmental recognition

proposed herein.

The service of the 17th Troop Carrier Squadron has been honorable

subsequent to the period for which recommended.

Other organizations are not being recommended for the same service.

 

 

5. 

An unclassified citation is attached.

 

 

6. 

Other recommendations for awards of the 17th Troop Carrier Squadron

are not pending at this time.

 

 

7. 

A previous award has not been made to the 17th Troop Carrier Squad-

ron for the same services described.

 

 

8.  

If the recommendation is approved, the award, presentation date de-

sired is as soon as possible.  The award elements should be forwarded to the Alaskan Air Command for presentation.  The 17th Troop Carrier

Squadron was assigned to the Alaskan Air Command effective 15 June 1964 per Hq TAC Special Order G-71, 16 April 1964.
