CITATION TO ACCOMPANY THE AWARD OF

THE AIR FORCE OUTSTANDING UNIT AWARD

TO

17TH TROOP CARRIER SQUADRON

UNITED STATES AIR FORCE

DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, TEXAS

The 17TH TROOP CARRIER SQUADRON distinguished itself by exception-

ally outstanding service to the United States Air Force from 1 July

1962 through 15 June 1964, while participating in airlift support

missions on the Greenland Ice Cap and other joint exercises as-

signed by its parent command.  Despite hazardous and unpredictable

weather, lack of navigational aids, and severe personal hardship,

its dedicated corps of air combat crews flew approximately 1836

sorties during 4827 hours of accident free flight, airlifting over

4594 passengers and slightly less than 20 million pounds of vital

cargo to the isolated radar sites of the DEW Line East Extension.

Other conventional missions brought its flying hour totals up to

20891 hours of accident free flying.  It was twice selected during

two consecutive quarters as the outstanding assault airlift squad-

ron of the entire Tactical Air Command.  The professional airman-

ship, ingenuity and selfless dedication to duty displayed by all

personnel of the 17TH TROOP CARRIER SQUADRON reflect great credit

upon themselves and the United States Air Force.
