radar.  On one approach, the navigator discovered his scope centerline

was off calibration.  Normally, this would have been perfectly legiti-

mate grounds for aborting the mission and returning to Sondrestrom, but

not for this crew.  The navigator interpolated manually, lined his

aircraft up for the approach and sat down dead center.  During one off-

loading operation, the aircraft cargo winch went out of commission.

Repair or replacement after return to Sondrestrom would have meant 3-4

hours in ground maintenance and the end of flying for that particular

day.  Requesting the pilot to take over his flight control duties, the

flight engineer assisted by the loadmaster repaired the winch during

the 1 1/2 hour flight back to Sondrestrom and had it in full working order

on arrival.  A nose strut assembly broke on one ice cap landing and grounded the aircraft at Dye Site #3.  Dead-heading back to Sondrestrom

on the next C-130 which also brought a maintenance team to the disabled

aircraft, Crew F-012 "borrowed" the aircraft of another C-130 crew which

was in crew rest and continued the airlift.  Twelve hours later, in-

spired by the example set by this aircrew, the heroic efforts of the

maintenance team had returned the disabled C-130 to airworthy condition

and back to Captain Glenn's crew.  (This maintenance team is being re-

commended for an appropriate decoration by separate correspondence.)

For performance well exceeding normal duty dictates, the officers and men of Crew F-012 have proved their fitness to wear the decoration proposed herein.
