On the Barren Path

October 2001

First Lt. Bill Carraher, an LC-130 co-pilot, watches for the ski-way on Greenland's ice cap. There are no landmarks on the bright white terrain, and the ski-way is outlined using colored flags. After 23 months of intense training, Carraher will be ready to move into the pilot's seat of the ski-bird.
