Captain Joe Valent, Jr.

VALENT, Joe Jr. age 71 of Hermitage. Mr. Valent, died peacefully at his home on January 17, 2008 with family and friends by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents; May Falgien and Joe Valent, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carolyn Chandler Valent of Hermitage; two sons, Joseph Scott and Marshall Alan Valent of Hermitage and Smyrna, respectively. He is also survived by a brother, Richard "Mikey" Valent; two sisters; Marie Simon and Betty Wagner, all of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Joe was born August 22, 1936 in Rockvale, Colorado, but grew up in Laramie, Wyoming. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1958 as a Mechanical Engineer. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force, where he learned to fly many different aircraft and participated in over 25 nuclear bomb tests ensuring our Nations continued security. He later was employed by American Airlines where he met and married Carolyn I Chandler, a beautiful stewardess. They moved to Hermitage, TN and raised their two sons. Joe retired from American Airlines after 33 years of service, in May of 1995. He was a member of the Gray Eagles, an organization of retired airline pilots. Joe was an avid fisherman and hunter, and will be sorely missed by his fishing and hunting friends. They traveled to many distant places to fish and hunt and have great stories to tell and memories to cherish of their times together. He was a devoted husband and father and a loyal and trustworthy friend. Funeral service to be conducted 10:00 a.m. Monday January 21, 2007, Hermitage Funeral Home with Bro. Phil Barnes officiating. Visitation with the family will be Sunday from 4-7 and two hours prior to the service on Monday. A reception for the family will be held at Hermitage Smorgasbord after the service. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Willard Hughes, Scott Raymond, Steve Ray, Gary O’Guin and bill Stewart. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Make A Wish Foundation of the Mid South, Alive Hospice or The Twilight Brigade/Compassion in Action.
