Bruce Powell Huff

 

September 3, 1933 – December 4, 2014

 

Bruce Powell Huff, Master Sergeant, USAF (Ret), was born September 3, 1933, in McGregor, Texas.  After a year-long illness he slipped away peacefully on December 4, 2014.

 

Interment will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2015, at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.  Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hewitt, Texas, on Saturday, January 3, with a lunch following.

 

Bruce’s early years were spent in Coryell County where the Huff and Abel families lived.  He attended Waco schools, and joined the Army National Guard, and ultimately the USAF, where he spent his military career as an aircraft mechanic and flight engineer on B-25 Bombers, C-47 (Gooney Bird), C-123, and the C-130 (Hercules). He retired after 22 ˝ years of military service. 

Bruce served in both the Korean and the Vietnam Wars. He was awarded numerous medals throughout his career, and remained active with the Firebird Association.  Recently, Bruce and Betty were both presented the Firebird Red Feather Award from the Firebirds. The Red Feather Award is presented at each Firebird Reunion to the Firebird than has given the most outstanding service in the past two years. Bruce served as both past vice-president, and past president of the Firebirds.

After Bruce’s retirement, he worked for Morgan Drive Away and Bennett, where he was awarded safety driving certificates during his years of service.

Survivors include:  wife, Betty Montgomery Thompson Huff of Houston, Texas; brothers, Virgil Huff, Jr. (Glenda) of Hewitt; James Huff of Waco; and sister, Elizabeth "Sissy" Huff Pryor (Royce) of Waco. Children: Bruce Powell Huff, Jr.  (Sherrell) of Hewitt; Patti Huff Smith (Gary) of Coppell; son Adrian Keith Huff of Bellmead; Karen Huff Kloepper (Aaron) of Coppell; Cregg Thompson (Chris) of Huntsville; Brady Thompson (Julie) of McKinney; Ginny Thompson Koehnle (John) of Willis; and Dana Thompson Edwards of Spring.  Twenty Grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, with two on the way, and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Preceded in death are his parents, Virgil “Landel” Huff and Johnnie Abel Huff Sowell and Charley Sowell, his son, Carl Alton Huff; and sisters, Anna Huff Todd Street and Frankie Huff Prichard Millsaps.
