Robert Allison Ahrens, 78, of State Highway
161, Town of Florida, passed away Thursday evening at Hilltop Manor in
Niskayuna. Born in Hackensack, N.J. on June 1, 1923,
he was a son of George W. and Eleanor R. Alison Ahrens. He was a graduate of
Westwood High School class of 1941. Later, he attended Chance Vaught
Technical School in Testerboro, N.J., where he received airframe and power
plant licenses. He came to the Amsterdam area in 1950. He was a World War II veteran, serving in
the Army Air Corps as an airplane and engine mechanic. From 1946 to 1983, he
served in the Air National Guard and was retired as a master sergeant. He was employed for many years by U.S.
Airways as an airline mechanic at the Albany County Airport, retiring in
1994. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars 2077 in Gloversville, and a member of the United Methodist Church on
Golf Course Road in Amsterdam. He was an enthusiast of model trains and
loved flying his own airplane. Mr. Ahrens married Jane Gregg Ahrens on
Aug. 4, 1951. In addition to his beloved wife, survivors
include a dear son, Thomas M. Ahrens, and his wife, Kathy, of Perth; a
stepson, Gregory J. Biasini of Evansville, Ind., and two cherished
grandchildren, Robert A. and Sarah B. Ahrens. Funeral services will be held on Monday at
10 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park
Ave., Amsterdam with the Rev. Garry W. Campbell presiding. Interment will be
in Saratoga National Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Empire State Aeroscience Museum, 250 Rudy Chase Drive, Glenville, 12303 or to the Montgomery County SPCA, Route 5s, Amsterdam, 12010. |
